Resolution update

Nine days into the New Year, I thought it might be time to reflect on how many of my resolutions (if any!) I’ve managed not to break.

Resolution No 1 – Learn French

This one has not been progressing terribly well.  I went to Leicester on Saturday to visit my boyfriend, and intended to spend the five hours it was going to take me to get there and back on rail replacement buses listening to Michel Thomas on my mp3 player.  Now, I do confess that I hadn’t turned my mp3 player on for the past three weeks, but I nevertheless expected it to still be in full working order.  Sitting on my first bus, however, I failed in the attempt to switch it on.  Hmmm, how frustrating :(  The obvious conclusion seemed to be that the battery was dead, despite the fact that I thought I had replaced it fairly recently, and so I used my waiting time at Birmingham New Street to buy a packet of AA batteries.  In fact, I ended up with two unwanted packets of AA batteries, because they were on buy one get one free in the sale.  Standing in the queue for the rail replacement service, I made a fine hash of attempting to open the device and replace the batteries, which involved much dropping of things on the floor.  Once I had finally succeeded I was disappointed to find that my mp3 switched on for one second, and then went off again.  In the vain hope that this might just be a duff battery I tried a second one, to no avail.  Bother it!  I was condemned to spend the entire day’s travelling in painful silence, and without a book to read

However, I am determined to salvage this resolution and to this end I have just purchased a new mp3 player from Argos.  Don’t laugh, but it’s Barbie pink   Well, it was really cheap and at least it means no one will want to mug me for it! The only other down sides are that I’ve discovered it takes AAA batteries when I have a drawer full of the AA variety, and I’m in capable of putting the Michel Thomas course on it myself, so I need to somehow get it to my boyfriend and convince him that he wants to sort it out for me.  This is likely to take weeks, which means my plan of spending my time in Wantage listening to French has been scuppered :(

Resolution No 2 – Lose weight

I’m not sure about this one, because I haven’t weighed myself yet.  Based on the fact that I scarcely ate on Saturday and Sunday, I could have lost a small amount but it’s likely to be balanced out by the four meals I ate on Monday, one of which was a McDonalds   On the upside, my boyfriend told me he didn’t think I needed to lose weight anyway :)

Resolution No 3 – Save money

I’ve utterly failed with this one :cry3:  I was doing really well all week, and then the events of Saturday completely ruined all my efforts.  In the course of two days, I managed to blow £200 I hadn’t intended to spend, with the net result being that I now have a grand total of £19.66 to get me through the rest of the month.  I desperately need to find out the pin number on my credit card, because the next few weeks are going to involve me paying several hundred pounds on hotels for work which, whilst they will later be refunded, could cause severe cashflow problems if they come off my debit card.  Unfortunately because I don’t ever use my credit card, I’m only about 50% confident that I know what the PIN number is

Resolution No 4 – Learn to drive

No, I’ve not started this one, but then I wasn’t planning to just yet.

Other resolutions

I’ve made unanticipated progress with one of them; being honest.  Unfortunately this isn’t an achievement to be proud of; on the contrary, a fact to be ashamed of since there are so many things which I have to be honest about.  Being honest has, I think, been moved to the top of my list of things I need to achieve in my life this year.  There isn’t a choice with this one; the consequences of failure mean it just isn’t an option.

Bring it with you on Saturday. I’ll be able to put it all on in just a few minutes using my laptop or work PC.

Oh, I thought it would take longer than that :) I mean, I thought I’d have to leave it with you and then get it back a week later or something… and in the circumstances I wasn’t sure I ought to be asking you to do me favours  But thank you, that would be really cool if you didn’t mind :)
