Quantum of Solace

Babel and I had a nice time at the weekend when, it being rather wintry outside, we decided to go to the cinema. I don’t think I’d been to the cinema since I saw Cloverfield earlier in the year – that film being so bad that I was rather wary of suggesting we see anything else. But Tim had the idea that we could see the new James Bond film, Quantum of Solace, and I thought that sounded like a plan, because there’s a limit to how bad a James Bond film can be :)

Not that I am a massive fan of James Bond films; being truthful, I haven’t seen most of them. My first ever date where I succeeded in buying a cinema ticket was admittedly to a James Bond film – I think it was Die Another Day – but apart from that and the one which is set on the Schilthorn in Switzerland, I’d struggle to name any that I’d seen. I certainly haven’t seen Casino Royale, and unfortunately didn’t realise until too late that Quantum of Solace was the sequel to it, but overall I don’t think that hampered my understanding of the action *too* much.

There certainly was a lot of action, and a lot of killing too. A friend once told me that as a pacifist I shouldn’t watch films which contain so much gratuitous violence. I think that viewpoint is a little extreme, but on the other hand I really don’t think I approve of this new 12A classification, which mean that there were some very small children in the audience. Whilst there was (disappointingly) no sex in it and I can only recall one swear word, the violence was constant and one scene in particular was so disturbing that I really don’t think it should be viewed by the under 12s :(

It was a pleasant way to spend an afternoon anyway, although I wouldn’t watch it again and I don’t find Daniel Craig attractive. And I despite looking it up on wikipedia, I still don’t understand the title!
