The 25 random things about me meme
1. I have already answered this meme once on Facebook, but in Esperanto. You never know who might be reading in English, and I thought my answers would be more interesting if I didn’t have to worry about not saying things I didn’t want colleagues/relatives/school friends to hear. I’m answering it now in English because I’m at work and bored, but the answers won’t be as exciting. And I’m not going to tag another 25 people!
2. I am very frequently at work and bored, though you may already know that. I hate my job, with a vengeance. My aim for this year was to find a better job, but the recruitment consultant rang me last week to apologise and say that there are no jobs
3. I spend a lot of my time in hotels. So far this year I’ve spent one week in Oswestry and three weeks in Wantage. Between now and May, I have one week in Wigan, three weeks in Banbury, three weeks in London and two weeks in Swindon. This makes me wonder whether it is even worth me moving in with Babel, because I won’t see him any more frequently than I do now
4. The other thing which puts me off moving in with Babel is that I’m worried he might try to make me eat vegetables. He’s kinda mean like that
5. As a rule, I don’t like anything which is green. I don’t like green vegetables and I’m not even terribly keen on green Smarties. I would never wear green clothes, and the thing I dislike most about Esperanto is the green flag.
6. I used to utterly despise Esperanto, but the more I speak it, the more it’s growing on me. I’m now finding myself being sucked into all sorts of Esperanto-related things which I didn’t intend to get involved with. Like in May, I’m supposed to be speaking on rather frightening theme of “Me and Esperanto” at a meeting of the North Western Esperanto Federation. I only agreed to do this because I’m scared of public speaking and I thought it would be character building.
7. Despite the fact that public speaking makes me feel ill, turn red and shake, when I was at school I always used to get to the semi-finals of our annual public speaking competition.
8. The strangest speech I can ever remember making was advocating the reintroduction of capital punishment in schools. This is strange because I later grew up to be a pacifist.
9. I take pacifism very seriously and if someone were going to kill Babel unless I killed him first, I’m afraid Babel would be biting the dust. Sorry Babel
10. Sorry is probably my favourite word. I apologise compulsively, especially when I’m not actually in the wrong. I get slightly offended when other people don’t apologise reciprocally. This may or may not have something to do with the fact that I have been brought up as a Catholic.
11. Being brought up as a Catholic is something which influences by life beyond repair. I occasionally offend people by talking about Christian names when I mean first names and assuming babies are going to be christened
Whenever I get scared, I automatically revert to praying to the Sacred Heart, sometimes in German.
12. I taught myself German out of a Berlitz book when I was in the Sixth Form and didn’t have a lot else to do. It passed the time in geography lessons.
13. For at least five years, my biggest ambition in life was actually to become a geography teacher. Then I did A Level and found the physical geography far too scientific, so I decided to do a maths degree instead.
14. I decided to do a maths degree on the grounds that I wasn’t very good at maths, and it would be a challenge. It was. Often I wish I’d done a degree in English Literature instead.
15. English was my best subject at school; I came in the top 5 marks in the country for my A Level with 596/600. The marks I dropped were for not knowing the difference between could of and could have.
16. I have since learnt the difference, but my grammar and punctuation is still not terribly good. I struggle to get excited about punctuation, but I am capable of getting excited about spelling.
17. One of the things which upsets me most in the whole wide world is people who spell definitely as definately. I used to have a boyfriend who did this.
18. My longest relationship lastest somewhere between three and four years. When I embarked upon it, it was with the understanding that it was only going to last three or four weeks. The day we got together, we shook hands and thought that was daring. Our first date was supposed to be to the cinema but ended up in a Tesco supermarket, after which I had to walk two miles carrying a heavy tub of ice-cream. Don’t ask.
19. My favourite ice-cream flavour is mint chocolate chip, although I am also quite partial to stracciatella. My nightmare ice-cream flavour would be banana.
20. This is because I have a severe phobia of bananas. Yes, I know this is strange. No, I have no memory of an early childhood trauma involving fruit. My hatred is so intense that I have told Babel that when we move in together, he isn’t allowed to eat bananas in the house.
21. I don’t expect that Babel will stick to this command, as he doesn’t seem keen on having the word “obey” included in his wedding vows
He also doesn’t want me to change my name if we ever get married. Because our views are diametrically opposed on every point of principle, I am absolutely adamant that I would want to change my name.
22. I have never met a (non-related) person who shares my surname. I believe this is because most of the people I know are Irish, and it’s a very un-Irish sort of name.
23. I am not a big fan of anything to do with Ireland. I don’t mind the odd bit of Irish music though, especially comedy songs like Paddy McGinty’s goat.
24. I like comedy in general, unless it’s exceptionally crude. If you’re not going out tonight, you should watch “Not Going Out” on BBC1 at 9.30, because it’s hilarious
Although the epsiode two weeks ago with the wanking in the bath was a little on the crude side.
25. Because the preceding 24 points have all linked together in an impressively seamless manner, the only logical way to conclude now would be by saying that I like wanking in the bath. This may or may not be true

Re: 25. You could have just ended by saying “I’m logging off the net now and going for a bath”, but no…. Still, it’s a handy thing to know. ;)
